Curriculum

The outline of the curriculum for the NEXUS Program is as follows.

Intensive Japanese language classes (for the first semester)

For the first semester, NEXUS students are required to take only both intensive Japanese language classes (10 credits)  and “Introduction and Academic Studies in Easy Japanese (4 credits)”. In principle, all NEXUS students entering any of the colleges follow the same curriculum during the first semester.

*Please note that only the NEXUS students who enter the College of Intercultural Communication are allowed to take designated specialized undergraduate courses offered in English for the first semester.

The intensive Japanese language classes are designed only for the NEXUS students to improve their Japanese language proficiency from N3 of JLPT to around N1 of JLPT during the first semester. In addition to grammar, reading & writing, and Kanji classes, the NEXUS students take a preparatory class to study their specialized undergraduate courses in Japanese. In this class, the student tutors, senior students from the same colleges as the NEXUS students, support the NEXUS students to understand well by facilitating text comprehension, reading aloud, and explaining Japanese cultural background.

At the end of the first semester, each NEXUS student’s academic results in the Intensive Japanese Language classes are evaluated. NEXUS students have passed all intensive classes (10 credits) and are determined to have Japanese language proficiency enough to study their specialization in Japanese. Then the NEXUS students can take specialized undergraduate courses in Japanese from the second semester onwards.

If a NEXUS student fails any intensive Japanese language class, the student is required to take only Japanese language classes for the following year. The student will be unable to take any specialized undergraduate courses during the period.
